Hand-Painted Tibetan Thangka Art | Menthang Tradition

Kailash Auras specializes in authentic Tibetan Buddhist thangka art, carrying forward the Menthang school, a leading tradition of Tibetan Buddhist painting. Our thangkas are painted entirely by hand by resident lama monks at Samye Monastery in Tibet. They use natural mineral pigments such as gold powder, cinnabar, lapis lazuli, malachite, and pearl powder, and each work undergoes a formal consecration ceremony.

Kailash Auras is more than a jewelry brand. Our core works are collectible hand-painted thangkas with devotional meaning, depicting sacred figures such as Zhakiram, Green Tara, White Tara, and the Medicine Buddha.

The Spirit of Traditional Craft: Painting as Practice at Samye Monastery

Samye Monastery, founded in the eighth century, is Tibet's first monastery and a sacred center of Tibetan Buddhism. The heart of KAILASH AURAS comes from thangka art, part of China's intangible cultural heritage.

We believe a true artwork should hold the creator's concentration and aspiration. Every thangka presented on this website comes from Samye, Tibet's first monastery complete with the Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. Each miniature is painted entirely by hand by artist-monks at the monastery. These are hand-painted works by lama monks, rather than machine prints or factory-produced pieces.

The monks maintain a quiet, meditative state as they paint, turning their understanding of scripture into exceptionally fine lines. Painting becomes a form of practice, giving the thangka a solemn presence and devotional significance beyond ordinary craft.

Gemstone Colors: Enduring Light from the Earth

Natural mineral pigments are valued for color that can endure through the centuries. They are a defining feature of these works, distinguishing them from reproductions made with chemical pigments. We follow traditional principles for sacred images and select our palette with exacting care.

  • Natural pigments: Every thangka uses carefully selected pure gold powder, cinnabar, lapis lazuli, malachite, pearl powder, and other natural mineral colors.
  • Heirloom texture: Mineral pigments give the painting gemstone-like saturation and fine particles that create lively effects in dappled sunlight.
  • Enduring color: These colors from the earth retain their radiance over time, giving the works lasting collectible and heirloom value.

Fulfilled Aspirations: Traditional Consecration

Each work receives a traditional Buddhist consecration and blessing ceremony led by ordained monks. At KAILASH AURAS, a completed artwork involves more than the painter's technical skill.

After completion, every thangka undergoes a formal ceremony at Samye Monastery following traditional practice. This ritual gives the work spiritual meaning as a portable mandala, expressing wishes for steadiness and the safeguarding of blessings and resources.

Our Mission

We share more than a product or painting: we share an approach to life that seeks unwavering concentration in a restless age. KAILASH AURAS invites you into an artistic refuge woven from mineral color, gold powder, and aspiration, and into the blessings associated with the sacred mountain of Sumeru.

All thangkas sold by Kailash Auras are original hand-painted works in the Menthang tradition. Each comes with a certificate of origin and can be traced to its Samye Monastery artist.

Natural Character: Nanhong Agate and African Jade

Alongside our focus on thangka art, KAILASH AURAS explores treasures formed by the earth. We select the warm red of Nanhong agate and the lively green of African Jade as a complementary jewelry collection, bringing natural gemstones together with miniature thangka painting.

Hand-braided vajra-knot cords and finely crafted settings create spiritual necklaces with Tibetan cultural depth and a refined contemporary appearance.
